Repair your Fritz Hansen, Series 7 chair’s detached seat at home with this DIY kit.

Clear instructions. Invisible result. Stronger than Fritz Hansen factory.

The seat of your beloved Arne Jacobsen, The Sevener suddenly came loose, broke off. Just like the other two last month. Frustrating because they still look perfectly fine. That first click wasn’t bad luck. Every chair in your set is the same age, carried the same years – the one that gave way is simply the one that told you first. They can be saved! Based in the Netherlands or Belgium? Bring it to my workshop in The Hague – I’ll repair it by hand. Anywhere else in the world, here’s exactly how to fix it yourself.

With this repair kit, you fix the Fritz Hansen Series 7 chair yourself – professionally, durably, and completely invisibly. You replace the failing plastic plate with a wooden one, stronger than what left the factory.

What’s included in the DIY kit?

✔️Wooden plates

✔️Technical adhesive

✔️Scraper

Along with the kit, you also get access to: A clear and extensive step-by-step “How to use it” video, and a written instruction guide.

Why is this method better than the original

Before 2002, Series 7 chairs were glued with a wooden plate. Thousands of those chairs are still rock solid today. The plastic version used after that? That’s now coming loose all over the world. With this kit, you can restore the chair to its original condition and even improve it using enhanced materials.

“Clear instructions, great materials, and the result is just as good as if a professional had done it!”

Developed from Dutch hands-on craftsmanship

In our workshops in Copenhagen, Denmark, and The Hague, the Netherlands, we repair numerous diningtable sets each year. This kit is built on that experience. The wooden disc is a replica of the tried-and-tested original model, which has been further engineered and improved. Our specialized glue, developed exclusively for us to perfectly match the wooden disc and old seat, comes in factory-prefilled syringes. Commercially available wood adhesives would eventually fail again.

Not everyone lives near our workshop.

That’s exactly why we built this method for home use. No special tools, no workshop needed – just what we learned restoring thousands of Series 7 chairs by hand, now fitting on any kitchen table, in any country. The same result you’d get if you brought the chair to us yourself. Because a chair with real history deserves a real repair – not a landfill, just because the workshop is too far away

“They are securely attached to the base again and can now last another 20 years (or more). Excellent service, pleasant communication. Thank you Ramses!!”

After hundreds of repairs, I’ve learned one thing: the first loose chair is often not the last. Time and again, customers return after the second one breaks loose to have the rest of their set done. That’s exactly what I’d like to help you avoid.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure I could handle this repair myself, so I only ordered the smallest kit. But the instructions were incredibly clear and the result is perfect! My only regret is not having more faith and just ordering for all my chairs. Now I’m back to order the rest. If you’re on the fence, just go for the full set. It’s easier than you think! Fix all the Series 7 chairs?  Or only the broken ones?

This video shows how easily other chairs come loose after the first one has come loose, the other chairs are affected in the same way, and will come off easily in the near future. Actually some of my clients show remorse when they only ordered a kit for 2 chairs, and the next failed thereafter shortly.

I brought in one Series 7 chair for repair to the workshop. Ramses immediately pointed out that the other chairs might also be in poor condition. Less than two days later, another chair broke. I was able to bring in the remaining five chairs for repair right away (and still received the offer for six chairs at once). Excellent service! Google  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  Reviews:  Maayke van Leeuwen

Can I keep some of the KITs for later use, when other chairs break?

No, we recommend planning the repair immediately after delivery due to the limited shelf life of 14 days. This short storage time is the direct result of superior quality: the formula is extremely reactive and contains fewer stabilisers to guarantee a significantly higher bond strength than standard adhesives.

“I only ordered a set for two chairs. A week later, a guest fell through one of the others I hadn’t fixed yet. I really regret not getting kits for all of them at once – would’ve saved me the stress, embarrassment, and extra shipping.”  Google  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  Review:  P. Gustafson – Sweden

"Its Amazing, I can fix my Arne Jacobsen chair for just 12% of the cost of buying a new one!"

Customer from Germany 🇩🇪 says:

I can only recommend Ramses Hertmann! The ‘weak point’ appeared with us at almost exactly 20 years, the glue had dried out. Six chairs were excellently and quickly re-glued and will continue to accompany us!

Customer from Norway 🇳🇴 says:

Hi Ramses,

Thank you so much for your great help! The repair kit and clear instructions made the job easy.
I managed to fix all six chairs in less than two hours — the day after the kit arrived!
Much appreciated!

Fritz Hansen chair spare parts repair Series 7 loose seat wooden replacement

2002 production change:  Wooden plate to a plastic plate

Left: wooden plate, used until the end of 2002

Middle: plastic plate used in current production

Right: The new wooden plate. Produced in-house with better adhesive properties and unbreakable.

The use of plastic plates since 2002, and their continued use today, is the reason why the seat comes loose from the base. I never receive chairs with a wooden plate from before 2002, so that system still works to this day. Which means every chair from your set is running on the same clock. One reaching its limit doesn’t say anything about that one chair – it says something about all of them.

(The same plastic plate is also used on the Vico Duo models by Fritz Hansen of which separating seats are come to my workshop.)

"Excellent! That they can be restored." ♻️

Waste Less, Sit Better: Series 7 Repairs for Tomorrow’s Offices

We recently became a partner of the Circular Hub by Ahrend and Gispen, the largest office furniture supplier in the Netherlands. For a university, we replaced the plastic mounting plate for their delivered resprayed ‘Revived’ Series 7 chairs.

Circular office design is no longer a trend, it’s a requirement. Government and educational institutions include a percentage of recycled furniture in every new fit-out. The Series 7 chair repair system turns discarded design classics into fully functional, future-proof pieces.

The Series 7 chair and its extended family aren’t the only product category of Fritz Hansen that fails.

Magistretti’s designed Vico Duo suffers from the same problems.

Fritz Hansen models VM110 to barstool VM118 all suffer from the breaking away of the seat.
That failure isn’t unique to Arne Jacobsen’s design; we see the same symptom on Magistretti’s Vico Duo chairs too, because Fritz Hansen used the same plastic plate solution on those models, as a result that the seats break away over time…..

Luckily there’s a solution to for that, our newly developed Vico-Duo-Chair-repair-DIY-kit is especially designed to help you out.

Repairing a broken Series 7 chair using the original plastic plate? – A Cautionary Tale

Many of my customers have tried repairing their Series 7 chairs, using the existing plastic plate that came loose from the seat. They’ve experimented with various types of glue, such as two-component araldite epoxy resin, polyurethane glue, hot melt glue, super glue, fast-set urethane adhesives, and sealants. Some even added bolts and screws. Unfortunately, all these methods have yielded poor results because the bonding qualities are inadequate.

The reality is, you can’t effectively repair the chair using the original plastic plate. Commercially available glues can’t hold the cracked plastic to the wood, and the already damaged plate will eventually break again. Did you already notice the white crack lines in your plastic plates? Along these lines is where the plates will break once you try to glue it again.

That’s why I developed a wooden replacement. More durable, stronger, and repairable. But a plate alone isn’t enough. The adhesive I use is made to do the job — even when the cleaned surface under the seat is uneven, it still creates a solid bond with the new wooden plate.

This combination — wood and glue — gives a lasting solution. And that’s not just a claim: out of over 1,000 chairs I’ve repaired, not a single one has come back with the same issue.

Series 7 Chair repair seat Fritz Hansen broken spare parts

Client from Wellington, New Zealand replied to me:

Good morning Ramses. Mission accomplished- all very easy to do. Good instructions. Just waiting for the glue to cure. You were right, the other chairs which hadn’t failed were a time bomb. When I removed the covers, the plates showed a lot of cracks so it was just time before they would have failed. They have all been replaced so looking forward to many more years of use and enjoyment. Cheers

Frequently asked questions

Fritz Hansen DIY Repair Kit — Series 7, Ant, Grand Prix & more

COMPATIBILITY & MODELS

Will this kit work for my chair?

The standard kit fits the most iconic models: the Series 7 (3107, 3207), the Lily (3101, 3208, 3108) and the Grand Prix (3130, 4130).
Got an Ant, a swivel base, or a Vico Duo? Make sure you mention it when you order — I’ll send a tailored kit with model-specific instructions, and will provide you a different kit in materials all together.

My chair has fabric or leather upholstery — does that change anything?

It can still be repaired. Send me a photo of the underside of the seat when you order. Upholstered models need a specific kit and adjusted instructions — skip that step and you’re making the job harder than it needs to be.

The back of my chair feels loose and floppy and weak - will the kit fix that?

No. A floppy back means the 8 veneer layers inside the shell are separating — a process called delamination. That’s the original glue giving up after 4 decades, and it can’t be reversed. This kit is designed for seats that have come away from the base entirely, not for internal structural failure.

Why a wooden disc — why not just reglue the original plastic plate?

Before 2002, thats the closest I traced it back on workshop experience, Fritz Hansen used a wooden mounting plate. Chairs from that era are still holding tight today, we never see problems with those. After 2002 they switched to plastic — and that’s exactly why so many seats are now coming loose.

Standard adhesives don’t bond reliably to damaged plastic. By the time the seat lets go, the plastic almost always shows white stress fractures: the material is exhausted and will fail again quickly if you try to reuse it. This kit takes your chair back to the pre-2002 principle — a precision-machined wooden disc combined with an adhesive developed specifically for this joint. Stronger than the original factory bond. More than a thousand repairs. None have come back. It is a subtle repair and doesn’t impact the originality.

THE REPAIR & WHAT IT TAKES

Where are the instructions?

The instructions are inside the box – not printed on a loose sheet, but accessed via a QR code on a sticker on the inside of the lid. Scan it, enter the pincode printed alongside it, and you’ll land on a dedicated page with two things: a 13-minute video walkthrough on YouTube and a PDF you can read on a tablet or print on A4.

The reason for this setup: it means I can update the instructions whenever I improve the process, without a stack of outdated paper in circulation.

Can I really do this myself, with no technical background?

Yes. No drilling, no clamping, no sawing. The kit was designed for people who care about their chairs, not for carpenters. You get a clear video guide and written step-by-step instructions. A customer in Norway repaired six chairs in under two hours. You will scrape the old glue away, press out 4 ml of a prefilled syringe, place the new wooden disc, wait, and reassemble.

What's actually in the kit?

Everything you need for a complete, invisible repair:

→ Precision-machined wooden replacement disc with steel inserts
→ Pre-filled industrial adhesive syringe — single component, ready to use, no mixing
→ Sharp paint scraper — for removing the old mounting plate remnants
→ Access to a step-by-step photo guide and video tutorial

What do I need to have at home? You only need a screwdriver (suitable for your original screws: either an M6 x 10mm Phillips or a T30 Torx head) and a cloth. No extra or specialized tools are needed.

How long does the repair take?

After reading the provided PDF and viewing the 14 min videoinstructions, around 15-20 minutes of active work per chair — scraping, gluing, mounting. The adhesive then needs 48 hours to cure fully before the chair is used again. Plan it for a moment when the chair can sit undisturbed for two days.

Stig a Norwegian client mentioned doing 6 chairs in under 2 hours

I've already tried regluing with epoxy or superglue. Does that complicate things?

It makes the prep work slightly more involved than with factory glue. Rubbery adhesive from a tube can be cut away. Hard epoxy is trickier — you may need someone confident with wood, or an oscillating tool like a multitool, to cut it away without touching the wooden base.

Mention it when you order and I’ll give you specific guidance on what to do before you start.

Is it safe to keep using a chair with a loose seat?

No. A seat that’s separating from its base can let go completely and without warning — including under the full weight of an adult. That’s a structural safety risk, not just an inconvenience. Repair all affected chairs at once. The mounting plate on every chair of the same age has been exposed to the same wear. If one has gone, the others aren’t far behind.

Blame the design, not the guest — once the original adhesive starts letting go, it was never a question of if, only which chair goes first.

What are the chances of making a mistake?

Extremely small. Out of over 1,000 repairs completed with this kit, only twice did something go wrong — and both times the customer was back on track with a short explanation and fresh materials.

The instructions guide you through every step: a detailed PDF and a 13-minute video that walks you through the process hand in hand. Take your time, follow the steps in order, and don’t rush the adhesive. That’s really all it takes.

And if something unexpected does happen — I’m here.

Oops - I forgot to use all of my kit within 14 days. Can I order extra glue?

It happens. If you repaired one chair and set the rest aside, the adhesive in the remaining syringes will have cured inside the tube by the time you return to them – that’s just the nature of a reactive glue without stabilisers.

You can order a refill of three syringes for a small fee covering materials and a contribution toward shipping. That’s enough adhesive to complete the remaining chairs in your set. Get in touch directly – by email or WhatsApp – and I’ll sort it out for you.

ORDERING & QUANTITIES

Why is the price per kit lower when I order more?

The kit price covers materials, packaging, the scraper and shipping and handling costs. With one kit, you carry those costs in full. With four or six, they’re spread across the set.

In practice, more than 95% of customers in the Netherlands and Belgium repair all their chairs at once. That’s not a coincidence. If one seat has let go, the others have been living with the same stress for the same number of years. Sometimes they follow without warning. Doing them all now saves you up to €135 in shipping on six chairs — and saves you from ordering twice.

SHIPPING & DELIVERY

Do I need to be home for delivery?

No. The kit ships in a Letter-box friendly postal box and comes with your regular post. (FEFCO 0427 cardboard box)

Will I get a tracking number?

Yes, if you provide an email address with your order. You’ll receive an automatic notification as soon as the shipment is created.

How long does delivery take?

Within Europe, usually a few days. For destinations further afield — Australia, for example — allow up to 13 days.

Estimated delivery times by region:

  • Europe: 2–7 business days (Benelux often next or second business day)
  • North America: 5–9 business days
  • Asia: 6–12 business days
  • Oceania: 7–14 business days
  • Africa & South America: 8–14+ business days

Does the 14-day shelf life leave enough time after delivery?

Yes. The 14 days is a conservative guideline — the adhesive stays effective beyond that point. We’ve factored in shipping times, including longer routes to Australia and New Zealand. Once your kit arrives, you have plenty of time to plan the repair without rushing.

“In practice, the adhesive remains fully effective for several weeks — the 14-day guideline is intentionally conservative.”

What's your returns policy?

Unused wooden discs, syringes, and scraper can be returned within 14 days. Return shipping is at the buyer’s expense. Contact me through the website to arrange a return.

WHY THIS APPROACH

Doesn't Fritz Hansen offer a repair solution themselves?

Fritz Hansen’s ReNew programme is aimed at large commercial clients. Private owners are typically referred to their dealer, where a full seat replacement runs around €350. This kit does the same job for roughly 12% of that — and you keep the original shell, with its patina and its history.

The few repair options Fritz Hansen does offer for individual chairs involve replacing the same plastic mounting plate that failed in the first place. It’s a temporary fix, not a solution.

Why does the adhesive only last 14 days?

The adhesive is highly reactive and contains almost no stabilisers – that’s precisely what gives it its bonding strength. Plan the repair as soon as the kit arrives. Don’t set it aside for later.

GUARANTEE

What guarantee do you offer on the repair?

10-year guarantee on the bond
If the seat comes away from the wooden disc within ten years, I’ll send you a replacement kit at no charge. All I need: a photo of the underside of the chair, your name and address, and the order number from your original purchase. Return shipping for the replacement kit is at the recipient’s expense.

More than a thousand chairs have been repaired with this system. None have come back. Not luck – the wooden disc and this adhesive together are stronger than the original factory joint.

The guarantee covers the bond between the wooden disc and the seat shell under normal domestic use. If the shell itself breaks through impact or overloading, or the veneer separates internally through age – that’s a different failure, and I’d be misleading you to promise coverage for that too.

TRADE & LARGER QUANTITIES

I manage a large number of chairs for a business or institution — can you help?

Yes. I regularly work with hotels, restaurants, universities and public institutions — dozens to hundreds of chairs at a time. Depending on the number and location, a combination of DIY kits and an on-site repair service is often the most efficient approach.

Get in touch and tell me how many chairs you’re dealing with. I’ll work out the best solution with you.
