How to professionally repair your Fritz Hansen Series 7 chair yourself.

Detached seat? This DIY 7-chair-repair-kit fixes the problem invisibly – and better than the original.

The seat of your beloved Arne Jacobsen, The Sevener suddenly came loose. Just like the other two last month. Frustrating because they still look perfectly fine. And you know: if one fails, the others won’t be far behind. You’re not the only one. That’s why there’s now a kit that lets you repair your chair yourself professionally, durably, and completely invisibly.

What’s included in the DIY kit?

✔️Wooden plates

✔️Technical adhesive

✔️Scraper

Along with the kit, you also get access to: A clear and extensive step-by-step “How to use it” video, and a written instruction guide.

Why this method is better than the original

Before 2002, Series 7 chairs were glued with a wooden plate. Thousands of those chairs are still rock solid today. The plastic version used after that? That’s now coming loose all over the world.

With this kit, you restore the chair the way it was originally intended and even better, using improved materials. You prevent further damage and keep the original look intact.

damaged series 7 chair fritz hansen repair

Developed from hands-on craftsmanship

For current clients in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, I repair hundreds of these chairs each year. This kit is built on that experience. The wooden disc is a replica of the tried-and-tested original model. The glue is specially developed and produced exclusively for us in factory-prefilled syringes. Standard available wood adhesives would eventually fail again.

But not everyone lives near our workshop.

That’s why we developed the original repair method, for home use.
Based on how we’ve restored hundreds of chairs, but designed so you can do it yourself. No special tools. No experience. And the same lasting result as our workshop repairs.

My mission: preserve design classics for the future. And fight waste at the same time. This way, we save raw materials and reduce CO₂ emissions.

I brought in one Series 7 chair for repair to the workshop. Ramses immediately pointed out that the other chairs might also be in poor condition. Less than two days later, another chair broke. I was able to bring in the remaining five chairs for repair right away (and still received the offer for six chairs at once). Excellent service! Google  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  Reviews:  Maayke van Leeuwen

Fritz Hansen chair spare parts repair Series 7 loose seat wooden replacement

Evolution of the fastening method

Left: wooden plate, used until the end of 2002

Middle: plastic plate used in current production

Right: The new wooden plate. Produced in-house with better adhesive properties and unbreakable.

The use of the plastic plate since 2002 is the reason why the seat comes loose from the base. I never receive chairs with a wooden plate from before 2002, so that system still works to this day.

Fix all the Series 7 chairs?  Or only the broken ones?

This video shows how easily other chairs come loose after the first one has come loose, the other chairs are affected in the same way, and will come off easily in the near future. Actually some of my clients show remorce when they only ordered a kit for 2 chairs, and the next failed thereafter shortly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a kit for just one chair? I feel like testing it

At the moment, we only supply the DIY kit as a set for a minimum of two chairs. There’s a good reason for that: in practice, when one seat comes loose, the others often follow soon after. The kit includes detailed tutorials, professional materials, and personal support via email or WhatsApp. We can only offer this level of service with a minimum order.

More than 99% of our customers in the Netherlands and Belgium choose to repair all their chairs at once.
That’s no coincidence. In practice, when one seat comes loose, the others often follow — sometimes without warning.

The repair system you’re buying has already been used on over a thousand chairs in our workshop. None have come back. So you’re not experimenting — you’re working with a proven solution.

By repairing all chairs in one go, you avoid unnecessary shipping costs later on. More importantly, you reduce the risk of further damage — to the chair, the finish, or the person sitting on it — if another seat lets go.

The kit includes detailed instructions, professional materials, and personal support via email or WhatsApp – in case you get stuck. We can only offer this level of service with a minimum order.

Thanks for your understanding!

Is the 7-chair-repair-kit suitable for all Series 7 chairs?

Yes – as long as your chair has a plastic mounting plate. Not sure? Just send us a photo.

Do I need any special tools?

No. A few screwdrivers and a cloth is all you need. Everything else is included in the kit.

What if I get stuck during the process?

You’ll receive clear instructions, and you can always email or message us. We’ll help you figure it out.

Can you repair the chair for me instead?

Yes. I restore Series 7, Ant, and Grand Prx chairs professionally in my Dutch workshop.
If you prefer to outsource the job or have a full set in need of repair, feel free to contact me for a quote.

Does Fritz Hansen offer a solution for a detached seat on a Series 7 chair?

Fritz Hansen’s ReNew program includes Repair, Refurbish and Recrafted. These services are aimed at large-scale corporate clients in Europe and cover things like replacing gliders, screws and respraying chairs. But: they do not offer a solution for detached seats on Series 7 chairs.

Private owners tell me dealers only offer one option: a complete new seat with a fresh plastic mounting plate – at €350. Repair isn’t mentioned. That means good seats are thrown away for no reason, even though the problem is easily fixable. A professional repair costs around €135. With our DIY kit, you can fix it yourself for €66.50.

We also see aging issues like the well-known “weak back,” where brittle glue causes the veneer layers to delaminate. Unfortunately, that can’t be repaired in a lasting way. But a detached seat? That can be restored easily, invisibly, and stronger than the original.

How do I know if this kit fits my chair?

This DIY kit is designed for Fritz Hansen chairs where the seat has detached from the black plastic mounting plate — commonly found in Series 7, Ant, and Grand Prix models made after 2003.
Still unsure? Flip your chair over. If there’s a black plastic plate between the seat and the frame, it fits.
You can always send a photo, I’ll take a look for you.

Can I really do this myself, without experience?

Yes. The kit is made for non-professionals with a love for design furniture.
No need to drill, clamp, or saw. You’ll receive a step-by-step guide, pre-filled glue syringes, and all tools needed.
Take your time, follow the instructions. If you’re not handy or unsure, consider reaching out to a local wood professional; they can certainly make it work.

What exactly is included in the kit?

Each set contains:

  • Wooden replacement plate with metall inserts
  • Pre-filled industrial glue syringe
  • A sharp paintscraper

And acces to a clear step-by-step instruction guide with photos and a video tutorial. Basically everything you need to succesfully repair your chair, invisible and secure.

Can I return the kit if I don’t use it?
Yes, you can return the kit within 14 days of delivery, provided it is unopened and in its original condition and packaging.
We will refund the purchase price of the kit. Return shipping costs are not reimbursed and are at your own expense.
Need help with a return? Just contact us.

Repairing a broken Series 7 chair using the plastic plate? – A Cautionary Tale

Many of my customers have tried repairing their Series 7 chairs, using the plastic plate that came loose from the seat. They’ve experimented with various types of glue, such as araldite epoxy resin, polyurethane glue, hot melt glue, super glue, fast-set urethane adhesives, and sealants. Some even added bolts and screws. Unfortunately, all these methods have yielded poor results because the bonding qualities are inadequate.

The reality is, you can’t effectively repair the chair using the original plastic plate. Commercially available glues can’t hold the cracked plastic to the wood, and the already damaged plate will eventually break again. Did you already notice the white crack lines in your plastic plates? Along these lines is where the plates will break once you try to glue it again.

That’s why I developed a wooden replacement. More durable, stronger, and repairable. But a plate alone isn’t enough. The adhesive I use is made to do the job — even when the cleaned surface under the seat is uneven, it still creates a solid bond with the new wooden plate.

This combination — wood and glue — gives a lasting solution. And that’s not just a claim: out of over 1,000 chairs I’ve repaired, not a single one has come back with the same issue.

No. 3107, The Sevener, No. 7, 1955
Arne Jacobsen Fritz Hansen

In 1955, four years after introducing the iconic Ant chair, Arne Jacobsen unveiled another timeless masterpiece for Fritz Hansen: the No. 3107, more famously known as the Sevener. While the Ant was bold and distinctive, the Sevener struck a balance—its sleek silhouette was more universal, instantly resonating with a broader audience. With its elegant, slightly larger seat shell and a backrest wide and tall enough to lean an arm on when sitting sideways, the chair offered both beauty and comfort.

Designed for versatility, the Sevener found its place everywhere—from stylish private homes to refined public institutions and dynamic workplaces. Its stackable design and optional brackets for row setups added practical appeal. But its true magic lies in the illusion it creates: the seat shell appears to float, thanks to its slim, gleaming legs that reflect their surroundings like light sculptures.

This sculptural feel is also deeply tied to the material. The chair’s characteristic narrow waist wasn’t just an aesthetic choice—it was a technical necessity that enabled the plywood to bend gracefully in three dimensions. The seat’s gentle springiness, enhanced by rubber inserts between the shell and frame, brings a quiet comfort to its form.

Jacobsen’s visionary use of plywood was sparked by his admiration for the work of Charles and Ray Eames, whose designs he encountered during a trip to the United States. That inspiration, paired with Jacobsen’s Nordic design sensibility, resulted in what would become his most celebrated chair model.

Today, the No. 3107 / Sevener remains a global design icon—over 7 million sold since 1955, and still counting.
